Video Answers. Episode 8.
In the 8th episode of Video Answers, we answer the question, “What is a DP?” We discuss who they are, what they do, and why you should care in episode 8 of Video Answers.
What is a DP?
A DP, or Director of Photography, is over all camera and lighting crews working on set. Not only do they oversee the crew, but they are also responsible for the creative and technical decisions related to the artistic image of the film.
What does the DP do?
The DP will work closely with the director before the shoot to determine the look and feel of your video.
Depending on the size and scope of the shoot, a DP may also run a camera. At Comprehensive Media, on larger projects anyway, the DP doesn’t shoot. Instead, they watch for those technical and creative details – framing, wardrobe, makeup and lighting – to make sure we’re getting what we need.
Can anyone on set be the DP?
It takes more than a DSLR and a light to call yourself a DP. A director of photography is always experienced and professional. They know what they’re doing.
So, what is a a DP?
A DP is that person that makes you look really good.
